Unexpected juxtapositions and luscious scenes accompany the nonsensical narrative presented in Altered Realities.
The blurry and dreamy qualities of my photographs are important to the topics I am exploring. My studio process often involves long exposure accompanied with a flash. In the execution of my photographs, I have a preconceived notion of the image I want and go about shooting it in a loosely controlled fashion. It is important for me to implement a photo shoot with a goal, but not be so rigid that things cannot evolve on their own. This adaptable process allows for both direction and reaction. Dancing between my initial vision and the ultimate image is part of what makes my process flexible and where almost any image can occur. This method of photography is informative on a psychological and personal level. It eventually leads to a re-examination of my position as a woman in American culture and how the myths and stories I have heard are prevalent in my creative thought process.
